THE AREA
Deemed the most tranquil county in the country by the Campaign to Protect Rural England, Northumberland is truly something special. Bordered by Scotland to the north and Tyneside to the south, this region is the least populated, least developed county that England has to offer, and it is for this reason that it has become such a popular destination for those who want to find some peace and quiet, but still want plenty to do. Netherton Country Cottages lie right on the doorstep of the Northumberland National Park, and spectacular scenery abounds, from the heather-clad slopes of the imposing Cheviots, to the beautiful valleys carved by rivers such as the Coquet, which flows right past the cottages. Northumberland is also blessed with over 100 miles of beautiful coastline, now designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Freshly caught fish and seafood is a specialty of this part of Northumberland and you can’t leave without trying some fresh crab in one of the quaint seaside villages such as Craster. Once marking the frontier of the Roman Empire, as well as being the battleground between Scots and English for centuries, Northumberland is steeped in history. The imposing castles at Alnwick and Bamburgh evoke a turbulent past, while slightly further south lies the World Heritage listed Hadrian's Wall, marking the furthest outposts of Rome. The beautiful village of Rothbury can be reached in ten minutes, and larger towns such as Alnwick and Newcastle are an easy drive away. This makes Netherton Country Cottages an ideal choice if you would like to experience the peace and tranquillity of the Northumbrian countryside while still being within easy reach of modern life.

THE ACCOMMODATION
Completed in 2009, this collection of fantastic, high quality holiday cottages have been carefully converted from a traditional nineteenth century farm steading. Occupying the site of the former cart shed, the cottages feature attractive arched entrances, opening into a spacious and light open-plan lounge, dining room and kitchen. The lounge has two comfortable leather sofas, quality oak furniture, flatscreen TV with DVD and Sky TV. The dining area has seating for four and the modern kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need including a dishwasher and washing machine. Upstairs, the cottage has a master double bedroom with exposed beam, Velux window in the eaves, and a floor level window looking out onto the courtyard . The second bedroom contains a bunk bed and enjoys views over the countryside through the south facing window. Both bedrooms are finished to a high standard with quality oak furniture. In addition, there is a modern family bathroom with electric shower and bath, basin and WC. At the front of each cottage there is a small terrace where you can enjoy alfresco dining or sit out and enjoy this tranquil location. For guests at these cottages only, there is a private tennis court and lovely open space to the north of the steading where you could have a picnic lunch and enjoy the stunning uninterrupted views over the Cheviot Hills. Two tributaries of the river Coquet converge here, and it’s a great place to look out for the family of otters living under the bridge. With the sound of the babbling streams and a wealth of wildlife on the doorstep, this is an ideal place to escape the pressures of modern life.
