We had an enjoyable time cruising the Stratford -upon-Avon Canal

An enjoyable experience was had overall but the amount of debris in the canal and on the banks in some areas was disappointing to see people visiting the canals should take their rubbish home with them as it ends up in the water eventually.

We have just returned early from our week away on the narrow boat Cymbeline (3 bed) as the boat was not fit for purpose! Rudder was completely bent and tiller about 40 degrees out resulting in steering being incredibly difficult and tiring, not to mention dangerous when encountering other boats on the canal. Another major issue was with the inverter, this enables you to plug in household appliances and also most importantly powers the fridge. Everyday the alarm for this went off despite the engine running which resulted in anything running on 240v switching themselves off. You're advised to use things like phone chargers only whilst the engine is running which we did and to turn the fridge down to between 2 and 3 at night so it could run off the leisure batteries. Despite doing this our fridge turned itself off every night and therefore its contents at room temperature by the morning. We were also advised to turn the engine ON half way through watching a film to prevent the TV from going off - a little impractical as you're not allowed to run your engine after 8pm on the canal. We had to call an engineer out twice early on in the week due to battery and rudder issues who was very helpful but admitted that the boat would need to be lifted out of the water in order for the rudder to be fixed properly. He also said that the boat had just been fitted with three new batteries so I suspect the previous guests had encountered issues with the inverter. Upon our return we complained to the manager about the issues with the boat and that it should never have gone out but he seemed indifferent and said turnaround time is too tight for them to take the boat out for a 'shake down' to check for such issues as bent rudders and basically relies on the honesty of Joe Public to report these things. Not good enough. He also said there weren't endless funds to maintain it but I'm guessing as it's not an ABC Leisure boat less care is taken of it. Very disappointing.

WE HAD A VERY LOVELY FEW DAYS ON THE CANAL BOAT, UNFORTUNATELY WE HAD TO RETURN EARLY DUE TO WORK COMMITMENTS, BUT IT WAS CERTAINLY WORTH THE TRIP. THE STAFF WERE VERY GOOD AT ALVECHURCH MARINA AND THE WEATHER WAS SUPERB, ALTHOUGH THAT IS DUE TO CHANCE OF COURSE. THANK YOU FOR OFFERING US THIS EXCHANGE WEEK. BEST WISHES, SUSAN
